RAKIM – NEW YORK TO CALI
N.Y. To Cali Bootleg – 12″
One of my favorite artists of all time is Rakim. I first saw him perform live in 1988 as Eric B & Rakim at Rock City in Nottingham while promoting their classic debut album Paid In Full.
A couple of years after my permanent move to New York in 1992 i made contact with him through a mutual friend and arranged for him to come down to the studio in Brooklyn and hear some beats.
He was working on a new album for MCA Records at the time and was looking for production. The first song of four we worked on was “New York To Cali” which was penned in as his first single after getting record of the week on Hot 97fm.
